The Cereal Disease Guides are essential reading to learn about the latest changes to disease resistance. The Guides also summarise what happened in the last season and what diseases are likely in the coming year.
The resistance ratings in the guides are an important management tool because they provide a guide to the potential grain yield loss that a variety may suffer if the season is conducive for disease development. Selecting varieties with the best resistance to diseases common to your area will reduce potential yield losses and the level of management required.

New South Wales
The NSW DPI Winter Crop Variety Guide provides information for NSW growers to choose the most suitable varieties by providing updated technical information each year.
The Queensland Government and GRDC publish an annual Wheat Variety Guide in conjunction with National Variety Trials (NVT). It outlines the performance of new wheat varieties and disease resistance ratings.
Two SARDI Cereal Disease Guides (scroll to the bottom of the page) update important cereal disease information annually. The Cereal Variety Disease Guide has the latest disease management information and resistance ratings and the Cereal Seed Treatment Fact Sheet has the latest seed treatment options available.
The DEDJTR annual Cereal Disease Guide outlines the latest disease management information and resistance ratings. DEDJTR Information Notes provide more detailed information on specific diseases including symptoms, disease cycle, economic importance and management. The NVT Victorian Winter Crop Summary outlines characteristics and yields of current varieties of major Victorian winter crops including disease resistance ratings.

Interpreting Resistance Classifications
Below is an explanation of the resistance ratings used for foliar diseases, and how they should be interpreted.
|R||Resistant, the disease will not multiply or cause any damage on this variety.|
|MR||Moderately Resistant, the disease may be visible and will multiply slightly, but it will not cause significant loss. However, under severe disease pressure fungicide applications may be required.|
|MS||Moderately Susceptible, the disease may cause losses up to 15 per cent or more in very severe cases.|
|S||Susceptible, the disease can be severe on this variety and losses of 15-50 per cent can occur.|
|VS||Very Susceptible, this variety should not be grown in areas where a disease is likely to be a problem. Losses greater than 50 per cent are possible, and the build-up of inoculum will create problems for other growers.|
These classifications are only a guide, and yield losses will depend on the environment and seasonal conditions.
