Soil borne disease risks and new PREDICTA® B tests

Management of soilborne diseases starts before you put the crop in. This was Alan McKay’s key message when he presented at the  Adelaide GRDC Research Updates on the impact, detection, and management of cereal root diseases.

The main soilborne disease risks for the Southern Region in 2018 are rhizoctonia, crown rot and root lesion nematodes (RLN). Cereal Cyst Nematodes and take-all could also be significant. Management strategies for control of these soilborne diseases need to be developed and implemented before crops are sown, and growers need to know which disease is impacting crops in order to do this.

This is why PREDICTA® B was developed – to help growers identify the potential soilborne disease risks so they can develop an appropriate management strategy before crops are sown. PREDICTA® B now has tests for nine diseases and researchers have been able to establish the relationship between DNA levels in the soil and potential yield loss associated with given levels. Tests for more diseases are being developed every year, with ascochyta in chickpeas, yellow leaf spot, white grain and charcoal rot added to Southern Region tests in 2018.
