Preparing for bag storage

The first step to successful grain-bag storage is buying the right bag. Testing bag quality can be easily done by pushing your thumb through the ede of the bag. Use subjective judgement to evaluate how easily the bag is punctured. Also double check the bag is specifically designed for grain not silage.

Ensure bags are UV stable for 12 months, complying with the ISO9001 standard.

A bag with stretch indicators clearly marked makes filling more accurate and leads to easier management.

Select a central, common storage site to make preparation, monitoring, maintenance, vermin control and outloading easier. Ideally the site will be hard, smooth, elevated with a gentle slope so water can drain away. Allow plenty of room around the bags for machinery access and trucks to turn.

Bare, firm ground makes using in-load and out-load machinery easier to use with less chance of brakes skidding. Firm even ground also makes cleanup easier and assists draining to prevent water pooling if any soil around the grain-bag subsides.

Grade and roll the site removing all sticks, rocks or sharp objects that may damage the bag. Any weeds on the site should be ideally sprayed out.

Anecdotally, a thin sprinkle of urea spread on the ground where the bag is to be laid can help deter mice from burrowing under it.
