MID ETo Update
16th September to 22nd September 2021

  • Flood irrigation interval for the last week was 12 days
  • Spray irrigation amount was  21 mm of irrigation water for the last week
  • The predicted weekly pasture water use:
    • Bairnsdale is 222 mm, MID 21 mm, Orbost 21 mm and Yarram 19 mm
  • Glenmaggie is at 95.9%

* These figures are approximate and do not take into account rainfall on farm*

Central Gippsland Irrigation Efficiency Incentives Program
Applications for funding under the Central Gippsland Irrigation Efficiency Incentive Program are open from Monday 20th September to Friday 29th October.
Funding is limited and new eligibility criteria are in place.
Funding is also now available for irrigation farm planning on a first come – first serve basis.
For further information contact the irrigation team at the West Gippsland CMA on 1300 094 262

Soil moisture levels at Cobains and Yarram

Both graphs indicate that soil moisture levels are falling, although sufficient moisture levels remain. Start up for spray irrigation may occur in the 7-10 days, it is very important to irrigate well before refill point to maintain adequate moisture levels in the soil over the irrigation season. Start up for flood irrigation may occur in 10-14 days providing no rainfall occurs, it can commence closer to the refill point as the soil moisture level will be increased to FWC following flood irrigation.

On-Farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme Round 2
The Victorian and Commonwealth Governments are offering a rebate to drought affected farm businesses who need to invest in on-farm water infrastructure that addresses the needs of grazing livestock or assists in maintaining existing permanent horticultural plantings.
The Scheme provides a one-off 25 per cent rebate up to $25,000 (GST exclusive) to eligible livestock and horticulture producers. The Scheme is open until the funds are fully allocated during 2021–22.

* Effective rainfall = daily rainfall minus 2mm.
ETₒ   and the “crop coefficient” (conversion factor) of 1.0 applies to a healthy productive pasture 12 cm high.
** This data is not included when doing any of the below calculations

MID average daily pasture water use over the last week was 3.0 mm/day.

The approximate MID flood irrigation interval based on last week’s daily pasture water use rate was 12 days. (This figure assumes that 30 mm of readily available water is held in the pasture root zone divided by the 3.0 mm/day = 10 days and then add an extra two days to account for waterlogging). This does not take into account any rain your farm may have got during the week which will extend the interval.

Spray irrigators in the MID needed to have applied on average 21 mm of irrigation water for the week to meet pasture water use (3.0 x 7). This irrigation figure does not take into account any rainfall on your farm, which must be subtracted from the required irrigation figure, and assumes that the spray irrigation system is applying water at 100% uniformity. This figure may be greater depending on the specific spray irrigation system uniformity.

For Friday 24th September to Wednesday 29th September

Location Predicted weekly pasture water use (mm/ha) Predicted Weekly Pasture water use (ML/ha) Predicted daily pasture water use (mm/day)
Bairnsdale 22 0.22 3.1
MID 21 0.21 3.0
Orbost 21 0.21 3
Yarram 19 0.19 2.7
