MID ETo Update
24th February to 2nd March 2022

  • Flood irrigation interval for the last week was 12 days
  • Spray irrigation amount was  22 mm of irrigation water for the last week
  • The predicted weekly pasture water use:
    • Bairnsdale is 21 mm, MID 20 mm, Orbost 20 mm and Yarram 22 mm
  • Glenmaggie is at 81.0%

* These figures are approximate and do not take into account rainfall on farm*

The Odd Spot
Soil Moisture Activity

The Cobains soil moisture graph shows that the soil moisture levels have been stepping down daily following the irrigation on the 24th of Jan and rain at the end of Jan. The soil moisture levels are close to the refill point, the next irrigation will be due in the next couple of days pending forecast rainfall.
The Yarram soil moisture graph shows that regular irrigations using the centre pivot applied has maintained sufficient moisture levels. This highlights the importance of correct irrigation scheduling which will allow for strong pasture production.
This site is a Dairy Optimisation Site of the Smarter Irrigation for Profit 2: What’s my yield gap? Maximising water productivity project,  supported by funding from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment as part of its Rural R&D for Profit program and Dairy Australia. It is supported locally by GippsDairy and Agriculture Victoria.

New grants for irrigation demonstrations and trials will soon be available in Gippsland
Have you been doing something for years that really works but you don’t have evidence/data to back up what you see on farm?
Have you wanted to trial something new, that hasn’t been done locally before?
Are you interested in trailing emerging technologies on your farm?
All irrigators in the Lake Wellington catchment (Central Gippsland) are invited to put forward their ideas.
Up to $27,000 per project available.

** This data is not included when doing any of the below calculations

MID average daily pasture water use over the last week was 3.1 mm/day.

The approximate MID flood irrigation interval based on last week’s daily pasture water use rate was 12 days. (This figure assumes that 30 mm of readily available water is held in the pasture root zone divided by the 3.1 mm/day = 10 days and then add an extra two days to account for waterlogging). This does not take into account any rain your farm may have got during the week which will extend the interval.

Spray irrigators in the MID needed to have applied on average 22 mm of irrigation water for the week to meet pasture water use (3.1 x 7). This irrigation figure does not take into account any rainfall on your farm, which must be subtracted from the required irrigation figure, and assumes that the spray irrigation system is applying water at 100% uniformity. This figure may be greater depending on the specific spray irrigation system uniformity.

For Friday 4th Mar to Thursday 10th Mar

Location Predicted weekly pasture water use (mm/ha) Predicted Weekly Pasture water use (ML/ha) Predicted daily pasture water use (mm/day)
Bairnsdale 21 0.21 3.0
MID 20 0.2 2.9
Orbost 20 0.2 2.9
Yarram 22 0.22 3.1
