“What we wish we knew”

A producer’s story about a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak on their farm

Have you considered if your egg business would survive an Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) outbreak?

All businesses face the prospect of overnight market closures, culling of all birds, product movement restrictions, time and cost of disease control activities, and brand damage. An EAD could also disrupt the trade, the people, and businesses that you depend on, making your business vulnerable. The impacts can be devastating, lasting weeks, months and even years.

Don’t think this doesn’t apply to pasture raised poultry businesses. Hayley and Matt Watson, producers from Queensland, recently shared their story of a Salmonella Enteritidis detection on their business in a webinar hosted by the Small-Scale Poultry Community of Practice. Hear from Matt and Haylee about the impact it had, how they managed this and what they do differently now.

You can be better prepared by understanding your business, how EADs are managed and how to minimise the risks.

Take the time to listen this video (14 mins) and get an insight from Matt and Hayley about how to move from “would I survive?” to “how I would survive”.

This webinar was recorded on 9 September 2024.
