David Shambrook is a dairy extension officer in the South East Victoria dairy services team with Agriculture Victoria based at Leongatha. He has worked with the department for about 40 years on a range of projects including growing and grazing pastures, soil management and in more recent times monitoring soil moisture.
His current work is linked strongly to the better management of on-farm resources such as dairy shed effluent and assisting farmers to reduce the impact of risks that may relate to the variable climate the farmers are operating under. This work is delivered by producing individual Effluent Use Plans and system health checks for farmers. Also he runs a nutrient advisor discussion group in Gippsland and assists in the production of a quarterly newsletter called “Milking the Weather” which provides relevant up to date ideas and suggestions on how to better manage the current seasonal conditions. David is also in charge of two of the pilot moisture monitoring sites that have been set up on dairy farms in Gippsland at Longwarry and Yarram.
