I’ve worked in many roles associated with the uptake of agricultural research over the past 25 years. I started out as a researcher but most of my roles have focussed on the implementation of new practices in agricultural systems. A lot of this experience was in horticulture through my roles as Technical Manager Australia for AgroFresh (a subsidiary of DOW Chemical) and as Implementation Leader for Zespri in New Zealand. What I loved about these roles was the challenge in taking a concept that might help and seeking to understanding if it does. Through this process you learn a lot about people, the different ways in which ag management systems work, barriers that you never thought would exist, and achieving outcomes in ways that at the start you didn’t think would be part of the equation. Working in the adoption space allows me to be creative, curious, adaptive and considered. I am currently working as Leader Industry Adoption for NSW DPI Agriculture with the responsibility of ensuring DPI Agriculture has a planned and rigorous approach to industry adoption. One of the key elements in achieving this is to ensure we develop an adoption mindset. To me an adoption mindset is about applying methods and approaches that help producers make informed decisions around practices that can benefit their business.  In order to achieve this one of the key areas the change industry needs to improve in is becoming evidence, not opinion, led when deciding what areas to focus our adoption efforts.
