Export Grants

Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) is a key Australian Government financial assistance program for exporters. Each year it helps some 4,000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to start or expand their export business.

EMDG is changing

Changes to EMDG begin in the 2021-22 financial year, but there will be a period of overlap with the previous reimbursement model. Further details about EMDG for your marketing activities undertaken after 1 July 2021 can be found here.

In September 2020, the Government decided to implement reforms recommended by an independent review (PDF, 7.83MB). These reforms will simplify and reorient EMDG from a reimbursement model to grant program.

EMDG will be more flexible and responsive to the needs of exporting businesses. It will be simpler for applicants and, provide greater certainty about how much funding grantees will receive.

The new EMDG Rules are part of the framework for a simpler grant program which will give funding certainty to Australian exporters upfront before they commit to their international marketing activities.

The draft 2021 EMDG Guidelines (PDF, 1.21MB) are currently out for public consultation until Friday 11 June 2021. Feedback on the draft Guidelines can be sent to EMDGReform@austrade.gov.au.

The Guidelines provide practical guidance on how the new program will operate, including aspects such as:

  • Are you eligible to apply?
  • When can you apply for the 2021–22 grant round?
  • How do you apply for a grant?
  • What documentation will you need to support your application?
  • What reporting will be required?
  • When and how will grant payments be made?
  • What will be included in the grant agreement?

What if I incur eligible expenses before 1 July 2021?

If you have eligible expenses for the financial year ending 30 June 2021, the process remains unchanged. This means you will be able to seek reimbursement of your promotional expenses incurred during 2020–21 in the usual way. Applications for expenses incurred prior to 30 June 2021 will be open from 1 July 2021.

From the 1 July 2021, applications for expenses for the 2020–21 financial year can be submitted. The lodgement period closes on the 30th of November 2021, unless you use a participating EMDG consultant, who can lodge an application on your behalf up to the 28 February 2022.
