SCHULZ Organic Dairy from Timboon, southwest Victoria, has been announced as a finalist in the Innovative Products or Services category of the Premier’s Sustainability Awards 2020 for its Milk In Glass Bottles initiative. Following a sell-out trial of hand-bottled milk at Farmers’ Markets, Schulz crowd-funded to purchase equipment and produce quantities required to retail its milk in the broader Victorian market.
Schulz now delivers more than 5000 reusable glass bottles of organic milk weekly, to more than 50 retailers Victoria-wide, with an excellent return rate of 95 per cent of bottles refilled and reissued. The initiative has averted 10,068kg of plastic bottles from landfill, as of May 2020. “We’re honoured to be recognised as part of such a ground breaking group of local Victorian sustainability initiatives,” says Simon Schulz. “As leaders in the industry, the expectation of our community to simply do better has kept us accountable and continues to push us to make changes.
“For us as organic dairy farmers, we are so lucky to be part of a network of ethically minded people who provide constant encouragement, support and, most importantly, demand for a more sustainable alternative. “With our Milk In Glass initiative, we saw a common desire that existed between our business and the community – a desire to reduce our footprint.
“It’s this community that keeps our Milk In Glass going today, from their support of our initial crowdfunding campaign in 2018, through to consumers who continue to buy and return our bottles across Victoria today.” The Innovative Products or Services category recognises outstanding innovation in products or services that contribute to sustainable outcomes. Sustainability Victoria CEO Claire Ferres Miles congratulated Schulz Organic Dairy on its achievement and said the project demonstrates an
innovative approach to driving a more sustainable future.
“The continued year-on-year growth of the Awards reflects optimism and momentum to achieve Victoria’s commitment to transition to a circular and zero net emissions economy to reduce, re-use and recycle,” Ferres Miles said. “From volunteer groups dedicating countless hours to large businesses taking action, it is inspiring to see the quality of varied and innovative submissions this year.”
Now in their 18th year, the Premier’s Sustainability Awards are Victoria’s most highly recognised annual sustainability awards program comprising of 10 categories.
Premier Daniel Andrews will personally select the winners of the overall awards, the Premier’s Recognition Award and Premier’s Regional Recognition Award, from this year’s list of finalists. The Premier’s Recognition Awards recognise submissions that showcase outstanding innovation in sustainability and demonstrate notable benefits
for metropolitan and regional Victoria.
