CropAlert Monitor for Russian Wheat Aphid September 2016
CropAlert – RWA monitor and spray
Russian wheat aphid (RWA) numbers have been steadily increasing the last few weeks and symptoms can be found in most paddocks. As crops are entering the high risk period of crop loss (growth stage Z40-85) advisors and growers are advised to check crops for percent infestation and continue to monitor throughout spring.
- Key recommendations
- Where detected in crop, check infestation thresholds – five out of fifty tillers showing damage symptoms and aphids
- Where chemical control is required use the softest option available to maintain beneficial insects.
- Good coverage is essential when spraying for RWA. Use water volumes of at least 100L/ha and include a non-ionic surfactant. It is recommended that nozzle pressure should deliver mid-size droplets.
