WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM THIS COURSE?

The use of water and its cost remain a key part of the production-profitability equation for many growers.

Centre pivot and lateral move systems are increasing in popularity. These systems can be water efficient, low energy consumers and useful for a range of crops. However, research shows that many Pivots and Lateral Move are not operating as well as they should.

This course will help growers/farmers understand key points for planning, design and operation to get the best out of these systems and maximise their cane productivity. Variable rate irrigation and management of these systems are given particular emphasis.”

This project is supported by Irrigation Australia, Agriculture Victoria, NCCMA and the Plan2Farm Project

On the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify the key components of centre pivot and lateral move (CPLM) systems

  • Background of CPLM irrigation systems
  • Components and the key inputs for an effective CPLM system

Identify the financial issues associated with the purchase and operation of a CPLM

  • Decision Making
  • financial analysis to compare irrigation systems
  • assessing current and future return on investment

List the factors necessary for planning to install a centre pivot or lateral move system

  • deciding on location – slope/soil/draining
  • water supply issues – quantity and quality
  • calculating the irrigable area
  • OVERsched software

Design considerations

  • Compare sprinkler and wheel options to improve operation of a CPLM system
  • design choices
  • structures of machines
  • wheel rutting and bogging
  • energy costs and pipe sizes

Identify key measures and indicators of CPLM system performance

  • benefits of evaluating performance
  • measures of performance
  • common issues affecting performance
  • measures, tools and methods for evaluation
  • water use Indices

Identify sprinkler package issues

  • development of sprinkler packages
  • end guns
  • sprinkler components
  • pressure regulators
  • LEPA systems
  • Droplet size and evaporation

Operational and maintenance issues

  • Irrigation scheduling
  • Germination
  • Spray management, Fertigation
  • General maintenance
  • Floods and strong winds
