Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority delivered 4 Occasional Counsellor workshops across the Goulburn region as part of the Regional Drought Resilience Planning program.

As the name suggests, the workshops were designed to strengthen the skills of natural resource management practitioners who are not employed in counselling roles, but who often need to provide emotional support to their communities during difficult periods.

More than 100 people attended the 4 workshops, held in Seymour, Tatura, Benalla and online in June and July 2025.

Led by Clinical and Forensic Psychologist David Cherry, the training promoted clear, confident communication and introduced strategies for lowering risk while staying within legal and professional boundaries.

Attendees reported increased confidence and stronger understandings of how to navigate sensitive conversations and how to support community members experiencing distress. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the value of practical, psychologically informed training for those working closely with regional communities.
