Promoting mental health awareness and support – Just a Farmer roadshow

Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (GB CMA) recently brought the powerful Australian drama Just a Farmer to communities across Victoria’s Goulburn region, turning community halls and cinemas into vital spaces for connection and peer support. Delivered as part of Victoria’s RDRP Implementation Grants program, the roadshow screenings were designed not just to entertain, but to spark urgent conversations about mental health in rural Australia.

Attendees in Alexandra, Dookie, Kyabram, Yea and Euroa were treated to communal meals—provided by local groups—creating a warm and supportive atmosphere before the lights went down and the film began.

Written and produced by Leila McDougall, Just a Farmer tells the raw story of a farming family navigating the aftermath of suicide, generational trauma, and the silent struggles often hidden behind the farm gate. The film’s authentic portrayal of rural life resonated deeply with local audiences, stripping away the “she’ll be right” attitude to reveal the resilience required to survive on the land.

A highlight of the roadshow was the inclusion of Q&A panels following the screenings. At several events, Leila McDougall herself joined the conversation, allowing audiences to engage directly with the film’s creator. These sessions provided a safe platform for farmers and residents to share their own stories, break down stigmas, and discuss strategies for supporting one another through tough times.

The initiative was a resounding success, with over 500 people attending the screenings. The GB CMA partnered with organisations like Fruit Growers Australia, Dairy Farmers Victoria, health organisations, local governments, Back Dog Ride, National Centre for Farmer Health, The Unbreakable Farmer Warren Davies, Ivan Lister and local Landcare groups to deliver the events.
