The Agriculture Victoria Soil Moisture Probe network was established ten years ago to test the use of technology used in the irrigation sector, in a dry land broadacre cropping scenario. Upon the success of this initial trial, the network has expanded to include probes in not only broadacre cropping paddocks, but sheep, cattle and dairy systems as well.

Information and analysis of data from the soil moisture probe network is generated monthly during the growing season formatted into a newsletter. Agriculture Victoria Seasonal Risk Agronomist, Dale Boyd, has been producing these newsletters for more than six years.

Subscribers to the cropping soil moisture monitoring newsletter have recently been surveyed with 91 per cent of respondents agreeing that measuring and monitoring soil moisture can assist with maximising production.
