Problem/Opportunity Identification

“It is crucial to invest in data. Without good data, we’re flying blind”. If you can’t see it, you can’t solve it” (Kofi Annan)

Being effective as a change agent means making sure we are making informed decisions around the types of change we are looking to promote within the agriculture sector.  This means accurately identifying the problems or opportunities that will benefit a farming management system through the introduction of new practices and not just promoting the outputs from research projects i.e.  problem/opportunity pull not solution push.

Defining problems/opportunities accurately is essential. There are numerous processes that can help.  Identifying and engaging with relevant stakeholders to gather diverse perspectives  is one approach. Gathering data through surveys, interviews, observations, or existing records is another as is consultation and/or brainstorming with industry representatives.

This resource is designed to help you learn about the value of collecting accurate data to inform your adoption planning, how to avoid collecting poor, ineffective data, and the best tools and methods to ensure success.
