Trans-Tasman Collaboration

Fisheries New Zealand and Industry partners are set to host another round of Regional Commercial Fisher Workshops, following the success of last year’s series (2024/2025). These workshops are designed to foster an innovative mindset within the fishing industry, helping fishers stay ahead of the curve with new gear and methods.

The upcoming regional workshops will provide an excellent opportunity for fishers to gather, learn about new innovations, discuss issues impacting their business, and receive valuable information. Each session will feature insights from both Fisheries New Zealand and industry experts, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the latest trends and challenges.

Given the synergies, members of the FRDC’s Trawl Innovation Network have secured the opportunity for Australian fishers and researchers to present and participate (virtually) at the following Gear Innovation Workshops, to encourage collaboration and two-way learning across the Tasman:

Dates  Key Regional Commercial Fisheries

Oct 3: Dunedin Bottom trawl (mixed fish species),

Gill Net (Elephant fish, school shark and gummy),

Potting (Ling and Rocklobster), and

Surface Longline (Southern Bluefin Tuna).

Nov 12: New Plymouth Bottom Trawl (Mixed fish species),

Gill Net (School and Gummy Shark),

Midwater trawl (Jack Mackerel),

Potting (Rocklobster), and

Troll (Albacore).

Nov 21: Nelson Bottom Trawl (mixed fish species),

Gill Net (Demersal fish and shark), and

Danish Seine (flatfish).

Jan 28: Greymouth Bottom Trawl (mixed fish species),

Midwater Trawl (Hoki),

Troll (Albacore),

Potting and Longline (Ling), and

Both inshore and deep water fleets.

Jan 30: Christchurch Bottom trawl (mixed fish species)

Gill Net (Demersal fish and shark).

Potting (Blue Cod), and

Midwater trawl (Squid and Hoki)
