Job Title: Industry Development Manager, Horticulture

Organisation: Agriculture Victoria

Location: Tatura

Since January 2019 I have been the Industry Development Manager, Horticulture. This has given me the opportunity to be heavily involved, and see the benefits of the ExtensionAus platform, as my team run the Integrated Pest and Disease Management page.

Trained in Horticulture at Burnley College, I have been in Horticultural research or extension my entire career. I have worked in a range of crops including cut flowers, coconuts, wine grapes and I am now working closely with the Goulburn Valley orchard Industry.

Biosecurity is important to me as I have worked for a year with the Agriculture Victoria Queensland Fruit Fly team. Through this role I saw first-hand the impacts a pest such as this can have on, not only industries, but also on communities and home gardeners.

One of my career ‘claims to fame’ was that I was the first to detect Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) in 1993 on a flower farm near Perth. From these I designed the effective “Ugly Isn’t It!” awareness campaign and book.

My garden is mostly natives with some roses, herbs, exotic feature trees and raised vegetable beds. I live on the Goulburn River and in a long, long (maybe forever!) process of weed eradication and revegetation on the property.
