An early estimate of crop density is an important agronomic tool to later manage canopy density which can have a major influence on final crop yield.

Following germinating rainfall, crops are ready to count to see how well the crop has established. Establishment numbers can be influenced by the sowing operation and seed quality but are largely determined by soil moisture.

Seasonal Risk Agronomist, Dale Grey, provides a demonstration on how to calculate plant density in your paddocks with Agriculture Victoria’s Crop Density Calculator.

Accuracy of crop density calculation estimates depend upon an adequate number of counts being taken to get a representative average of the paddock.
