Plan development
Victoria’s 9 Regional Drought Resilience Plans identify priorities and actions for building drought resilience in that region.
Plans were developed in collaboration with regional stakeholders, by analysing the impact of drought in the region (prevalence, severity and frequency of past, present and predicted future droughts), identifying the key needs for the region, and then the actions to address them.
Across Victoria’s 9 regions, over 1,100 different stakeholders were engaged in more than 530 meetings, workshops and informations sessions to develop the Plans. Stakeholders included local government and catchment management authorities, water corporations, farming groups and businesses, individuals/community members, emergency services personnel, Traditional Owner groups, universities, community health and not-for-profit organisations, regional development organisations and others.
Key themes in Plans
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to building drought resilience, with each Plan reflecting its region’s particular landscapes, communities and economies. However, some consistent themes came through in Plan development across the state. All Plans have a focus on building drought resilience through investing in:
- Healthy and connected communities
- Diverse and innovative agricultural industries and regional economies
- Sustainable use and management of natural resources
- Education, knowledge sharing and capacity building
- Collaborative governance and partnerships between diverse stakeholders
Plan implementation
To kick-start implementation of Plan actions in Phase One of the RDRP, a Plan Coordinator (regional organisation) in each region was awarded a $380,000 Implementation Grant, co-funded by the Victorian government and the Australian government’s Future Drought Fund. Implementation Grants support the delivery of activities in each region.
